‘US Arms Industry Benefits from Chaos’

President Barack Obama’s administration has been finalizing new measures for weeks in response to a series of recent mass shootings, such as the massacre of 14 people in San Bernardino, California in December.

The US government’s attempts to tighten gun control in the country are all but gimmicks as Washington sows chaos around the world to the benefit of its arms industry, says an American digital forensics investigator. The changes would include requiring more small-scale gun sellers to be licensed and expanding background checks on gun sales, Politico reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with proposals. Other measures would require citizens to report guns that are lost or stolen.

“I do not think that the gun industry or the one percent that controls the United States economy and control things here in the US are in favor of gun control,” Ed Opperman told Press TV on Friday. “As a matter of fact, I think they are in favor of selling more guns.”

The private investigator also argued that there is a relationship between the promotion of firearms and Islamophobia in the US, as the latter is used to boost gun sales. American Muslims strongly condemned the December 2, 2015 mass shooting in California within hours, but this did not stop the US mainstream media from going on a rampage against Islam.

Official reports have confirmed that background checks required for gun sales surged after the attacks. Opperman further cast doubt on Obama’s ability to inflict any new restrictions on gun ownership in America. The analyst said that Obama’s successor, be it Democratic or Republican, will revoke his executive orders as the country is home to the world’s biggest gun manufacturers. “The USA has the biggest arms industry sellers on the planet,” he noted.

The Nevada-based investigator referred to Washington’s tendency to stir “chaos” around the world to the benefit of the American military-industrial complex. “It is in the US interest to sell arms around the world and to create chaos and to create disruption and I believe, equally, here in the United States,” he argued.

Today, it is estimated that there are between 270 million and 300 million guns in the US, about one per person, according to the New York Daily News.
